Are you always thirsty or tired, craving something sweet, and having to use the washroom frequently? Then, do not ignore them; they can be early signs of diabetes, while diabetes can be managed to prevent it from turning into Type 2 (NIDDK, 2020). People often mistreat the symptoms as being “older”, “just stress”. In most cases, many Indians live with undiagnosed diabetes for years, as it starts quietly.
Why Early Detection Matters?
Type 2 diabetes slowly takes over Type 1, over the years, without giving any signals. As the body becomes resistant to insulin, and sugar builds quietly
in the blood, people take them as. From this, the body can be at severe danger, as late diagnosis has already created complications, including:
● Heart strain
● Kidney stress
● Nerve tingling
● Swollen eye lens or other eye sight issues
● Neurological Issues
Multiple reports focusing on the Indian diabetes crisis highlight that nearly half of the people with diabetes in India don’t even know they have it (Business Standards, 2025). A new Lancet global health data also discloses that one in every five Indians has diabetes, and most of them could not even realize it before it gets too late (Team TOI Plus, 2025). So, early detection can prevent most of it, as there can be tablets over injections and salads over surgeries to keep it under control.
The General Symptoms
There are some general signs one should know when to pay attention and consult a doctor.
➢ Excessive thirst and urination: Your body flushes extra sugar through urine, dragging water with it. If you have to run for the bathroom every hour, then take note.
➢ Unexplained weight loss: Even if you eat a normal amount and follow your general diet, sugar stays in the blood, not cells, making you feel like starving.
➢ Constant fatigue: Cells run out of energy, and you feel tired early.
➢ Blurred vision: Fluctuation in sugar levels can swell eye lenses, and even wearing glasses will not fix this.
➢ Slow-healing wounds: High sugar feeds bacteria and weakens your immune system. If you get a cut that lingers for weeks, it can be a sign.
The Silent Symptoms
There are also several not-so-obvious symptoms you should know about.
➢ Tingling or numbness in hands or feet: Neuropathy begins with a tingling sensation in the hands or feet, often called “pins and needles”. You blame tight shoes for the numbness, but it is sugar’s fault.
➢ Dark, velvety skin patches (acanthosis nigricans): Patches can be seen in areas, like neck folds, underarms, and groin, as a sign of insulin resistance. It is very common in Indians, even before weight gain.
➢ Mood swings or brain fog: Blood sugar spikes and drops, making you irritable and lose focus. You snap at colleagues, friends, at small things, and trouble remembering small daily habits, but blame others.
➢ Constant hunger: Despite eating full meals, you feel hungry as blood sugar levels are disrupted.
➢ Gum infections or bad breath: Sugar feeds oral bacteria, and you can see redness and start having bad breath. If your gums bleed very often, do not just brush; check your sugar.
➢ Recurring Yeast or Urinary infections: Yeast thrives in high-sugar, especially among women, resulting in UTIs

When to Decide It is Time for a Test
Observe your symptoms and weight gain/loss without any dietary change. You can also book a fasting glucose or non-fasting HbA1c.
● HbA1c <5.7% = You are Safe
● 5.7-6.4% = Prediabetes
● ≥ 6.5% = diabetes (Early diagnosis can control diabetes only by lifestyle modification)
So, When to Consult a Doctor?
Checklist to fill before consulting a doctor:
● Thirst/Urination Frequently
